Cats and plastic water bottles: Italy vs. Japan
In Italy people believe that plastic water bottles scare cats (and perhaps dogs).
So Italians put bottles in front of the houses, in the streets, at the corners... everywhere, because they think that cats prefer to pee in peace, far from their terrifying images reflected in the bottles. In this way Italians protect their homes from the bad smells.

Nevertheless, I noticed that the Japanese do the same thing... and this is a shock to me because I always thought it was just a nice Italian popular belief.
So maybe it works!!!
